Rawalpindi: In a disturbing incident on Thursday, July 16, 2024, at midnight, a group of young men attacked a peaceful citizen, Mr. Raja Umer, subjecting him to abuse and physical assault. Despite his restraint and faith in law enforcement, Mr. Umer’s trust was betrayed by the very authorities sworn to protect him.
Mr. Umer, demonstrating exemplary responsibility, did not retaliate against his attackers. Instead, he promptly reported the incident to the police helpline (15) and provided video evidence to the duty officer, SI Awais Afzal. Additionally, he sent all the evidence to SHO Waris Khan, Tehzeeb Shah. However, SHO Tehzeeb Shah is notoriously known for his disinterest in police station matters, preferring to sleep through the night and engage in personal businesses during the day.
As expected, SHO Tehzeeb Shah delegated the matter to SI Awais Afzal and Head Constable Riaz Gill, both of whom reportedly have close ties with the attackers. Shockingly, instead of taking action against the assailants, SI Awais and Head Constable Riaz Gill allegedly advised the attackers to file a counter-complaint against Mr. Umer. They then threatened Mr. Umer, suggesting that if he did not withdraw his complaint, he would be arrested under sections 107/151 of the Penal Code. Furthermore, with the upcoming holidays on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, they warned that he would spend at least three days in custody before bail could be arranged.
This blatant abuse of power and dereliction of duty by Rawalpindi Police has raised serious questions about the integrity and effectiveness of local law enforcement. Mr. Umer, despite having video evidence of the attack, was coerced into silence by those who are supposed to uphold the law and protect citizens.
Key Demands:
- Immediate Dismissal: SHO Tehzeeb Shah, SI Awais Afzal, and Head Constable Riaz Gill should be immediately suspended from their duties.
- Departmental Inquiry: A thorough and transparent departmental inquiry should be initiated to investigate the misconduct and connections between the officers and the attackers.
