MURREE: Murree has entered a new era of administrative excellence under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi, who has taken unprecedented precautionary measures for the snowy season. For the first time in Murree’s history, a proactive approach has been adopted to ensure safety and convenience for both residents and visitors, setting a new standard for governance in the region.
In a conversation with Daily Information Times, DC Sherazi credited the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, whose directive to prioritize citizen and tourist welfare is the driving force behind these efforts.
Historic Precautions to Avoid Crises
Breaking from the traditional reactive measures, DC Shirazi has initiated large-scale preparations ahead of Murree’s snowfall season, which runs from December 2 to March 15, 2025. A snow emergency has been declared, and 19 emergency check posts have been activated throughout the district to address potential challenges.
In collaboration with the Rawalpindi Commissioner, 100 Civil Defence personnel have been deployed to Murree for added support. The first batch of 16 personnel has already been stationed, with more arriving soon.
Traffic management systems, rarely enforced in previous administrations, are now operating with strict monitoring at key entry points, such as Islamabad Toll Plaza and GT Road Toll Plaza, to regulate vehicle limits and ensure smooth travel.
Ensuring Tourist Satisfaction and Safety
DC Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi administration has taken robust steps to enhance the tourist experience in Murree:
- Price Regulation: Hotels, motels, and guesthouses have been categorised with fixed rates, ensuring tourists are not overcharged. Violations will result in sealing and heavy fines.
- Facility Centres: 19 facility centres have been established at key points, including GPO Chowk, Mall Road, and Sunny Bank, providing 24/7 assistance to tourists.
- Snow-Clearing Operations: A fleet of snow-clearing vehicles has been deployed with round-the-clock drivers to maintain safe and clear roads. Large quantities of salt have been distributed to prevent icy surfaces.
A Model of Interdepartmental Coordination
In an impressive show of teamwork, representatives from 22 institutions are working in shifts at emergency check posts and facility centres, ensuring constant availability of resources. The administration is also collaborating with the National Highway Authority (NHA), Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), and other agencies to prepare for potential challenges.
The administration’s use of hourly weather updates from the Meteorological Department, along with real-time communication tools such as PTCL landlines and mobile phones, ensures timely responses to any situation.
Promoting a Positive Image of Murree
By enforcing strict hotel regulations, deploying additional traffic police, and providing facilities for tourists, DC Shirazi has not only safeguarded lives but also elevated Murree’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination. His focus on preemptive measures instead of reactionary responses reflects a commitment to public welfare, aligning with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision of a thriving Punjab.
This historic shift in governance is a beacon of hope for the region and sets an example for other districts. Murree is now poised to offer visitors a secure, enjoyable, and memorable experience during this snowy season, thanks to the exceptional efforts of Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi and his team.
