Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are set to commemorate their sixth wedding anniversary this weekend, but Meghan’s father will not be part of the celebrations.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex exchanged vows on May 19, 2018, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
While family and friends attended, Thomas Markle, the father of the bride, was notably absent.
Initially expected to walk Meghan down the aisle, Thomas withdrew following a paparazzi scandal.
According to the Mirror, Thomas admitted to staging photos for payment, leading to his decision to skip the wedding to avoid further embarrassment.
While Kensington Palace cited health reasons, attributing his absence to a reported heart attack, Meghan’s statement conveyed concern for his well-being.
A statement from Meghan distributed by the Palace said: “Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health.”
Meghan’s relationship with her father has deteriorated over time, with their last communication occurring before her wedding.
In a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan discussed the pain caused by their fractured bond.
Despite their estrangement, Thomas has made public pleas to reconnect, including a request to meet his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, during a televised interview on Good Morning Britain last September.
