Prince Harry, a passionate advocate for the armed forces community, has recognized the extraordinary achievements of Sergeant First Class Elizabeth Marks with the Military Times Soldier of the Year Award. In a heartfelt virtual address, the Duke of Sussex praised Marks as a “beacon of inspiration.”
Harry first met Marks, a U.S. Army combat medic, at the 2016 Invictus Games in Orlando, where she won multiple gold medals in swimming. “To me, she epitomizes the courage, resilience, and determination represented across our service community,” Harry said.
Marks’ journey has been marked by challenges. Despite serious injuries sustained during her deployment to Iraq, she persevered, becoming the first woman and first swimmer in the Army’s world-class athlete program. Her commitment extends beyond her own recovery; she uses her experience to inspire and coach others, particularly fellow wounded warriors.
“Ellie, you embody the Invictus spirit through your selfless service,” Harry said. “You know that sport doesn’t just save lives, it transforms them for the better… I am honored to call you my friend.”
Prince Harry’s military service includes two tours in Afghanistan. He remains passionately involved with veteran causes, including the Invictus Games, which he founded to showcase the healing power of sport for wounded service members.
