Misuse of Authority by SP Islamabad Police Arsalan Shahzaib


ISLAMABAD: In a disturbing incident that highlights the misuse of authority within the Islamabad Police, SP Arsalan Shahzaib has overstepped his bounds, leading to the unjust arrest of senior reporter Jahangir Aslam of ARY News. Mr. Aslam, who also serves as the President of the Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) Workers, was detained and locked up at the Ramna Police Station under questionable circumstances.

The incident unfolded when Jahangir Aslam intervened to protect Dr. Sadia Kamal, a senior female journalist and former Vice President of the Press Club, from the abusive behavior of money changer Shehzad Satti. This altercation occurred within the office of SP Sadar Arsalan Shahzaib, who failed to take action against Mr. Satti. Instead, SP Shahzaib ordered the arrest of Jahangir Aslam, raising serious concerns about his motivations and the apparent abuse of his power.

Furthermore, during the incident, SP Arsalan Shahzaib’s rude reader Ansar his associates forcibly snatched Jahangir Aslam’s phone and threatened him with the registration of false drug trafficking FIRs. This attempt to intimidate and silence a journalist through coercion and threats further underscores the urgent need for accountability and justice.

Investigations have revealed a troubling connection between SP Arsalan Shahzaib and Shehzad Satti, suggesting that their close relationship may have influenced the SP’s actions. This incident not only undermines the rule of law but also threatens the freedom and safety of journalists who are dedicated to upholding the truth and protecting public interest.

The Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) Workers condemns this blatant misuse of authority and calls for an immediate and thorough investigation into the conduct of SP Arsalan Shahzaib. We demand  assurance that such incidents will not recur, ensuring the safety and freedom of the press.
