OGDCL: At the Forefront of Pakistan’s Energy Revolution

           “Our Energy, Your Power: OGDCL.”

ISLAMABAD: Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), the pinnacle of hydrocarbon exploration in Pakistan, is taking decisive steps to combat the energy crisis by targeting 20 major fields. These fields, distributed across the north and south of the country, are crucial in enhancing oil and gas output, underscoring OGDCL’s central role in fortifying the nation’s energy reserves.

Currently, Pakistan’s increasing dependency on imported liquefied natural gas, which now makes up 24% of the energy mix, underscores the need for ramped-up domestic production. Against this backdrop, OGDCL’s initiative to leverage modern technologies to optimize oil and gas production marks a pivotal shift towards reducing this reliance. The success of these technological applications is evident, positioning OGDCL as a leader in innovation within the industry.

OGDCL’s targeted fields include 14 oil fields—such as Kunnar, Tando Alam, Pasakhi, and Toot—and six gas and gas condensate fields like Chanda and Qadirpur. These fields are strategic assets in OGDCL’s portfolio, reflecting the company’s commitment to maximizing national resources.

In a robust response to the national energy needs, OGDCL plans to increase its oil production from the current 34,000 barrels per day to 50,000 barrels per day within the next three to four years. This significant increase will be supported by converting over 15 oil wells to advanced artificial lift systems and by drilling new wells to sustain and expand production capabilities.

Furthermore, OGDCL is implementing pressure maintenance projects to start in the financial year 2024-25, focusing on maintaining reservoir pressure and optimizing output over the long term. The company is also set to enhance its raw gas production by up to 1.4 billion cubic feet over the next five to six years by developing fields with low British thermal unit reserves and making new discoveries in areas previously considered high-risk.

Reflecting on the importance of energy in driving national development across industry, agriculture, and everyday household needs, OGDCL is positioned as more than just an energy company. It is a vital contributor to Pakistan’s economic growth and energy security, relentlessly pursuing new hydrocarbon reserves and employing innovative technologies.

The company’s efforts also extend to ongoing development projects aimed at long-term production enhancement, ensuring OGDCL’s role as a leader in sustainable energy production. With a dedicated working group of petroleum industry professionals, OGDCL is poised to introduce and apply revolutionary technologies and systems to increase production from both existing brownfield projects and new schemes.

OGDCL’s proactive strategies and technological adaptations exemplify its commitment to securing and enhancing Pakistan’s energy independence. As OGDCL leads with innovation and strategic foresight, it continues to be a beacon of progress in the exploration and production sector, promising a more secure and prosperous energy future for Pakistan.
