ISLAMABAD: HelpAge International recently organized a successful one-day workshop in Islamabad, addressing the challenges of the growing elderly population and the critical issue of ageism. Attended by numerous senior journalists from the region, the workshop celebrated the invaluable contributions of the elderly to society and emphasized the urgent need to foster a more inclusive and empathetic approach to senior citizens.

Mr. Shahzado Khaskheli, Head of Programs at HelpAge International, led the workshop by exploring the complex social and psychological challenges faced by elderly individuals. He highlighted that these issues often stem from prevailing ageist attitudes that isolate seniors, depriving them of their rightful place in society. Mr. Khaskheli shared that, with proper lifestyle adjustments, individuals could significantly extend their lives, underscoring the importance of self-care for longevity.

HelpAge Communications Officer Mr. Faisal Dayo further encouraged participants to reshape their perceptions of the elderly, advocating for a shift toward empathy and inclusion in everyday interactions. The interactive format allowed attendees to engage with the speakers, who addressed various questions about ageism and ways to improve seniors’ lives.

The workshop underscored that senior citizens, as pillars of wisdom and cultural continuity, deserve recognition and support. It also highlighted global frameworks, such as the UN Principles for Older Persons (1991) and the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA, 2002), which have been instrumental in setting standards for elderly care and protection. These frameworks align closely with Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding senior citizens’ rights, as evidenced by national and provincial legislation such as the Senior Citizen Act and similar bills across multiple provinces.

HelpAge International’s efforts to promote age-inclusive policies and practices reflect a profound understanding of the challenges faced by elderly communities in Pakistan. In a society where respect and care for seniors hold significant moral and spiritual importance, HelpAge has set a commendable example by raising awareness and advocating for the rights and well-being of older citizens.

This workshop represents a valuable step toward creating an age-friendly society, and HelpAge International continues to inspire change, striving for a future where seniors live with dignity, respect, and equal opportunities.
