Urgent Appeal for Justice and Accountability within Islamabad Police as a fourteen-year-old victim

Dear Editor,

I am writing this appeal as a concerned citizen, but more importantly, as a fourteen-year-old victim who experienced a grave injustice at the hands of ASI M. Zaman from Golra Police Station. It is disheartening to witness the erosion of trust and respect for law enforcement officers, which is why I implore you to shed light on this distressing incident.

On the night of 22nd May 2023, I Tahir Abbas, along with my uncle, visited Golra Police Station to file a complaint against a group of intoxicated individuals who brutally assaulted me while I was crossing the street at 12:45 am. Seeking justice and safety, I approached ASI Zaman, hoping that he would listen to my plea and take appropriate action against the culprits. However, to my dismay, ASI Zaman callously disregarded my complaint, questioning why we had dared to disturb his sleep.

Instead of upholding the law and ensuring justice, ASI Zaman unjustly detained me, a minor, along with other criminals for an entire night under the false charges of 107/151. This blatant misuse of power and violation of my rights is a clear reflection of the dereliction of duty displayed by ASI Zaman. Such actions not only tarnish the reputation of the Islamabad Police but also undermine the trust that the community places in law enforcement officials.

In my pursuit of justice, I took it upon myself to register a complaint in the police diary (number 521/24.05.2023) addressed to the concerned Superintendent of Police (SP). Regrettably, no tangible action has been taken thus far, leaving me and many others disillusioned and hopeless. We are left questioning whether the authorities are truly committed to holding errant officers accountable and rectifying the system.

It is my firm belief, as well as that of the civil society, that dedicated and upright officers like DIG Syed Shehzad Nadeem Bukhari, the spearhead of DIG Operation Islamabad Police, will not allow such ill-mannered individuals to tarnish the image of our police force. DIG Syed Shehzad Nadeem Bukhari has earned a reputation for his commitment to upholding justice, and it is my sincere hope that he will take swift and decisive action in this matter.

I urge DIG Syed Shehzad Nadeem Bukhari to intervene personally and investigate this incident thoroughly. The exemplary steps taken against ASI Zaman will demonstrate the commitment of the Islamabad Police to justice, transparency, and public service. By holding him accountable for his misconduct, it will send a clear message to other officers who may be tempted to misuse their authority.

In a society that relies on the integrity and dedication of its police force, it is essential to maintain public trust and confidence. The onus falls on our leaders, both within the police department and the government, to ensure that individuals like ASI Zaman do not escape the consequences of their actions.

I kindly request your esteemed publication to bring attention to this matter through the power of the press. The media’s voice can inspire change, demand accountability, and encourage the responsible authorities to take immediate action in rectifying this injustice.

Let us not allow the actions of a few to overshadow the tireless efforts of those committed to serving and protecting the community. Together, we can foster a system that instills trust and respect in our law enforcement agencies, ensuring a safer future for all.
